Württemberg

**Württemberg** is a wine region in southwestern Germany centred on the Neckar valley and its tributaries around Stuttgart and Heilbronn. **Wines & grapes** — Unusually for Germany, it is a red-dominated region. Trollinger is the traditional local red, joined by Lemberger (Blaufränkisch), Schwarzriesling (Pinot Meunier) and Spätburgunder, alongside white Riesling. **Character** — Vineyards on warm valley slopes give reds that are typically soft, approachable and often enjoyed young and locally, with Lemberger producing the more structured, ageable examples. Much of the output is consumed within the region, where wine is a strong part of everyday culture. **Good to know** — Trollinger is something of a regional institution, tied closely to Swabian identity.
