**Robertson** lies inland in South Africa's Western Cape, in the Breede River valley, and has built its reputation especially on white wine. **Wines & grapes** — Chardonnay is the local star, but the region also turns out good Sauvignon Blanc and Colombard, along with increasingly serious Shiraz and other reds. **Character** — Robertson is unusual for the Cape in having lime-rich soils, which suit both vines and — historically — the horse studs the valley was known for. The climate is warm and dry, but cooling breezes drawn up the valley help preserve freshness, giving the Chardonnays a balance of ripe fruit and lively acidity.
