Mosel

**Mosel** follows the twisting Mosel River in western Germany, near the borders with Luxembourg and France, and is one of the world's great homes for Riesling. **Wines & grapes** — Riesling dominates overwhelmingly, made in a spectrum from bone-dry (trocken) to lusciously sweet late-harvest bottlings such as Spätlese, Auslese, and the rare Trockenbeerenauslese. Smaller amounts of Müller-Thurgau and Elbling are also grown. **Character** — The vines cling to breathtakingly steep slopes of blue and grey slate that soak up warmth and reflect it back, helping grapes ripen in this cool, northerly climate. The results are famously light in alcohol, vivid with citrus and orchard fruit, and threaded with a bright, mineral acidity. **Good to know** — The finest sites, like the Bernkasteler Doctor and Wehlener Sonnenuhr, are among Germany's most revered vineyards.
