Minho

**Minho** is a green, rainy province in the far northwest of Portugal, tucked between the Douro and the Spanish border, and it is the home of the country's most famous fresh white style, Vinho Verde. **Wines & grapes** — This is the heartland of Vinho Verde, mostly crisp whites from grapes such as Alvarinho, Loureiro, Trajadura and Arinto, though light reds and rosés are made too. Bottlings range from simple, faintly fizzy quaffers to serious, mineral single-varietal Alvarinho. **Character** — The Atlantic climate is cool and wet, so the wines tend to be low in alcohol, high in zippy acidity and often finished with a light spritz. Expect green-apple, citrus and floral notes and a clean, thirst-quenching bite. **Good to know** — "Verde" means young and fresh here, not literally green in colour.
