Macedonia

**Macedonia** ... — a large region in northern Greece stretching from the Aegean coast toward the mountainous interior. It is one of the country's most important sources of serious red wine. **Wines & grapes** — The flagship grape is Xinomavro, the backbone of appellations such as Naoussa and Amyndeon, giving structured, age-worthy reds. Other local and international varieties are grown too, and the region produces still reds, rosés and some whites. **Character** — Climate ranges from warmer coastal zones to cooler, higher-altitude sites inland. Xinomavro is prized for its firm tannins, high acidity and savoury tomato-and-herb character, and it is often compared to Nebbiolo for its structure and capacity to age.
