Jumilla

**Jumilla** is a warm, arid wine region in southeastern Spain, straddling the Murcia and Castilla-La Mancha border, celebrated as a stronghold of the Monastrell grape. **Wines & grapes** — Powerful, dark reds from Monastrell (known elsewhere as Mourvèdre) are the signature, sometimes blended with Syrah, Tempranillo, Garnacha or Cabernet Sauvignon. Some fresh whites and rosés are also made. **Character** — Baking sun, very low rainfall and high-altitude limestone soils concentrate the fruit, giving ripe, full-bodied reds with dark berry flavours, a warm herbal note and often generous alcohol. Old bush-trained vines add depth. **Good to know** — Phylloxera reached Jumilla unusually late, its spread slowed by the region's sandy soils, and low-yielding old vines still make it a source of concentrated reds at excellent value.
