Roussanne

**Roussanne** is a white grape from France's northern Rhône, often partnered with Marsanne to make some of the region's most distinguished whites. Its name is thought to nod to the russet tint the ripe berries take on. **In the glass** — aromatic and refined, showing pear, quince, honeysuckle, herbal tea and a nutty note, with vibrant acidity and an elegant, structured palate that can gain weight and complexity with age. **Where it grows** — it is central to the northern Rhône appellations such as Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage and Saint-Joseph, and features in the whites of Châteauneuf-du-Pape further south. It has also spread to the Languedoc, California, Australia and beyond, often in Rhône-style blends. **At the table** — good with roast poultry, richer fish dishes and creamy soft cheeses. **Cellaring** — unusually age-worthy for a white, the best examples develop honeyed, nutty complexity over five to ten years or more.
