**Nero di Troia** is a red grape from Puglia in southern Italy, also known as Uva di Troia, and one of the region's three signature native reds alongside Primitivo and Negroamaro. It ripens late and is prized for the firmness and structure it brings. **In the glass** — deep ruby to garnet, with aromas of dark cherry, blackberry, dried herbs and a peppery, slightly floral edge. The palate is full and firmly tannic, with fresh acidity that keeps it lively. **Where it grows** — its heartland is northern Puglia, particularly around Castel del Monte, and it also features in the wines of Cerignola. It is very much a regional specialty, little seen elsewhere. **At the table** — good with roast lamb, braised beef and hard sheep's-milk cheeses. **Cellaring** — its tannin and acidity give it real ageing potential, with the more serious bottlings softening and gaining complexity over several years.
