Grüner Veltliner

**Grüner Veltliner** is a white grape and Austria's signature variety, most associated with Lower Austria (Niederösterreich). It ranges from crisp everyday wines to serious, age-worthy bottlings. **In the glass** — its hallmark is a savoury tension between citrus and green apple, a peppery, radish-like spice, and a mineral streak. Bright acidity keeps it lively, while riper examples gain stone-fruit weight and a rounder body. **Where it grows** — the great sites cluster along the Danube in the Wachau, Kamptal and Kremstal, where terraced vineyards yield concentrated, structured wines. It is also widely grown across Austria and neighbouring parts of Central Europe, with lighter, zesty styles at the entry level. **At the table** — famously versatile, it handles tricky partners like asparagus, artichokes and Wiener schnitzel with ease. **Cellaring** — simple versions shine young, but top single-vineyard wines can age gracefully for a decade or more, gaining honeyed depth.
