Freisa

**Freisa** is a red grape from Piedmont in northwest Italy and a close relative of Nebbiolo; it has a long local history and appears in many guises, from lightly sparkling and off-dry to fully dry and still. **In the glass** — bright ruby, with aromas of raspberry, wild strawberry, rose and a savoury, faintly bitter edge; typically high in acidity and tannin with a light to medium body. **Where it grows** — throughout Piedmont, especially around Asti, Turin and the Langhe; styles range from frothy frizzante versions to firmer, structured dry reds. **At the table** — salumi, filled pasta such as agnolotti, and rich Piedmontese antipasti. **Cellaring** — usually enjoyed young, though the drier, more structured versions can age gracefully for a few years.
