De Chaunac

**De Chaunac** is a red hybrid of mixed European and American parentage, developed in France and later valued across cooler parts of North America for its disease resistance and tolerance of hard winters. **In the glass** — it produces a fairly deeply coloured red with tart dark-berry fruit, moderate to high acidity, light-to-medium body and generally soft tannins. **Where it grows** — it found its footing in cooler winegrowing areas of eastern Canada and the northeastern United States, where its resistance to frost made it valuable, though plantings have declined as growers shifted to other varieties. **At the table** — suits simple roast meats and casual, everyday dishes. **Cellaring** — best enjoyed young while its fruit is fresh.
