**Concord** is a dark-skinned American grape derived from the native species Vitis labrusca, developed in Massachusetts in the mid-19th century. Hugely important in the United States, it is the classic grape behind grape juice, jelly and kosher sweet wines as much as it is a wine grape. **In the glass** — it is unmistakable, with a deep purple colour and the intense "foxy", grapey aroma typical of labrusca, alongside notes of jam and candied fruit. Wines are usually made in a sweet or off-dry style to balance high natural acidity, and tannins are light. **Where it grows** — it thrives across the eastern and midwestern United States, notably New York, and tolerates cold winters far better than European vinifera vines. **At the table** — the sweeter styles suit desserts, or simply casual sipping. **Cellaring** — not built for the cellar; drink it young and fresh.
