Tasting profile
Structure: medium-bodied, medium tannin, high acidity, dry
Magellan is the amphora red of Clos de l'Élu (now trading as Terre de l'Élu), the biodynamic estate that Thomas and Charlotte Carsin took over in 2008 at Saint-Aubin-de-Luigné on the Layon slopes. It is Cabernet Franc on Anjou schist, cold-soaked, fermented and aged for about a year in terracotta amphorae rather than wood, so the fruit and the stone speak plainly. Expect pure, spicy dark berries and violets over slatey, peppery minerality, with a herbal Loire edge. It has silky tannins and fresh acidity, and the balance and grip to gain savoury complexity with age.
