Tasting profile

Structure: medium-bodied, low tannin, high acidity, off-dry

Traminette is an American hybrid — Gewürztraminer crossed with Joannes Seyve — bred at Illinois and released by Cornell to give the East Coast an aromatic white that survives its winters. It inherits much of the parent's perfume: lychee, rose petal and a spicy ginger lift, with honeysuckle and citrus. What it does not inherit is the low acidity, so where Alsace Gewurztraminer reads broad and oily, this stays lively and cut. Barrel treatment adds a nutty texture without smothering the aromatics. Off-dry rather than sweet, and a genuinely successful piece of grape breeding.

Where it comes from

Pennsylvania — A state in the northeastern United States with a small but growing wine industry spread across many family-run wineries.
