Vinho Verde

**Vinho Verde** comes from the Minho region in the cool, green, rainy north-west of Portugal, and the name means "green wine" in the sense of young and fresh rather than any colour. **Wines & grapes** — It is best known for light, zesty whites, often with a faint natural spritz, made from grapes like Alvarinho, Loureiro, Trajadura and Arinto. Reds and rosés are also produced, though the crisp whites define the region. **Character** — The damp Atlantic climate and lush landscape yield wines that are low in alcohol, high in acidity and delightfully refreshing. Traditionally the vines were trained high to cope with the humidity, and the top expressions — especially single-varietal Alvarinho — can show real depth and structure.
