**Texas** — A growing wine region in the southern United States, and one of the country's larger producers by volume. Most vineyards lie in the High Plains around Lubbock and in the Hill Country at the centre of the state. **Wines & grapes** — Warm-climate grapes do best, with Tempranillo, Mourvèdre, Sangiovese and Viognier among the varieties suited to the heat, alongside other Rhône and Mediterranean styles. **Character** — A hot, sunny climate tempered by high-altitude sites and cool nights on the plains gives ripe, full-bodied wines. The industry is young but improving quickly.
