La Mancha

**La Mancha** is a huge wine region on the arid central plateau south of Madrid, one of the largest single denominated vineyard areas in the world and historically the engine of Spain's bulk wine output. **Wines & grapes** — The white Airén, planted across enormous acreage, remains a mainstay, while reds increasingly rely on Tempranillo (locally called Cencibel), alongside Garnacha, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. **Character** — The climate is fiercely continental, with scorching summers, cold winters and very little rain, which keeps yields naturally in check and concentrates flavour. Modern winemaking has lifted quality considerably, and the region now turns out clean, fruity, affordable reds and whites. **Good to know** — The name is forever tied to Don Quixote's windswept plains.
