Dão

**Dão** ... — a historic wine region in north-central Portugal, set in a granite plateau ringed by mountains that shelter it from coastal and continental extremes. It is one of the country's classic sources of refined red wine. **Wines & grapes** — reds built around Touriga Nacional, with Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo), Alfrocheiro and Jaen, plus fresh whites led by the Encruzado grape. **Character** — granite soils, altitude and a protected climate give the reds firm structure, elegance and the ability to age gracefully, often described as more restrained and perfumed than the bolder wines of the nearby Douro. Encruzado, meanwhile, makes some of Portugal's finest dry whites. **Good to know** — long regarded alongside the Douro as one of Portugal's benchmark table-wine regions.
