**Canary Islands, Tenerife** is a volcanic island off the northwest coast of Africa, part of Spain, whose vineyards climb the flanks of the Teide volcano and rank among the most dramatic in Europe. **Wines & grapes** — Both colours are made, largely from indigenous grapes rarely seen elsewhere: the red Listán Negro and the white Listán Blanco (the local name for Palomino), alongside aromatic Malvasía and other old varieties. **Character** — Because the islands escaped the phylloxera louse, many vines grow ungrafted and are extremely old, some trained in low braided ropes across black volcanic ash. The wines often show a smoky, mineral, slightly saline streak that reflects the porous volcanic soils and the tug of the Atlantic. **Good to know** — The high-altitude vineyards let growers keep freshness despite the subtropical latitude.
