Aargau

**Aargau** is a canton in northern Switzerland where vineyards follow the valleys of the Aare and Rhine rivers. **Wines & grapes** — Pinot Noir, locally called Blauburgunder, is the leading red, while whites lean on Müller-Thurgau (often labelled Riesling-Silvaner) and Riesling. Production is on a modest scale. **Character** — This is one of Switzerland's more northerly wine areas, so the climate is cool and the wines tend to be light, fresh and aromatic. Most is consumed within the country and rarely seen abroad.
