Müller-Thurgau

**Müller-Thurgau** is a white grape created in 1882 by Hermann Müller, a viticulturist from the Swiss canton of Thurgau, who crossed Riesling with Madeleine Royale — the vine carries both his name and that of his home canton. It became hugely popular for its early ripening and generous yields, spreading fast through German-speaking wine country in the twentieth century. **In the glass** — light and soft, with gentle aromas of green apple, pear and a faint floral or muscat-like lift; the acidity is modest and the body light, making it easy and approachable rather than intense. **Where it grows** — long a workhorse of Germany, where it is also called Riesling-Silvaner or Riesling x Sylvaner, and widely planted in Austria, northern Italy (Alto Adige), Switzerland, Hungary and the Czech Republic. Cool sites and lower yields give it more definition and charm. **At the table** — a friendly match for fresh salads, mild cheeses and light fish dishes. **Cellaring** — best enjoyed young and fresh, within a year or two of the vintage.
