Moscato

**Moscato** is the Italian name for the white Muscat grape, above all the ancient Moscato Bianco (Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains), and it is one of the most instantly recognisable, floral grapes in the world. **In the glass** — it is unmistakably grapey and perfumed, with orange blossom, ripe peach and honeysuckle; most famously it is made lightly sweet and gently sparkling, low in alcohol, with bright acidity keeping it fresh rather than cloying. **Where it grows** — Piedmont is its most celebrated home, source of the frothy, fragrant Moscato d'Asti and sparkling Asti, but it is planted throughout Italy and, as Muscat, across the wine world in styles from dry to richly sweet. **At the table** — delightful with fresh fruit, light desserts, or simply as a low-alcohol aperitif. **Cellaring** — meant to be drunk young, while its aromatics are at their most vivid.
