Fiano

**Fiano** is a white grape from Campania in southern Italy, with a heritage stretching back to antiquity around the town of Avellino. It is one of the south's most respected white varieties, capable of wines with real depth and character. **In the glass** — it shows a golden hue and complex aromas of honey, hazelnut, ripe pear, dried herbs and a distinctive smoky, waxy note. The palate is dry and medium- to full-bodied, with a firm structure, good acidity and a long, savoury finish. **Where it grows** — its benchmark is Fiano di Avellino in Campania, and it is also widely planted across Sicily and Puglia, as well as farther afield in Australia, where it suits warm climates well. **At the table** — excellent with grilled fish, shellfish, poultry and creamy pasta. **Cellaring** — unusually age-worthy for a southern Italian white, the best examples gain nutty complexity over several years.
