Delaware

**Delaware** is a pink-skinned American hybrid that, despite its coloured berries, is used to make white wine. A labrusca-influenced variety, it has been grown in the eastern United States since the nineteenth century and remains a familiar name in American and Japanese vineyards. **In the glass** — it gives light, delicately fruity whites with a milder version of the grapey, "foxy" labrusca character, soft acidity and gentle floral notes, usually finished off-dry to sweet. **Where it grows** — the eastern US is its origin, but it is especially important in Japan, where it is a leading grape for everyday white and lightly sparkling wines. **At the table** — enjoy it as an easy aperitif or alongside light, slightly sweet dishes and fresh fruit. **Cellaring** — drink it young while its soft fruit and freshness are at their best.
