Blauer Portugieser

**Blauer Portugieser** is a red grape long grown across Austria and Central Europe, prized for high yields and easy, unfussy drinking despite a name that has little real connection to Portugal. **In the glass** — expect a pale-to-medium ruby, soft red-cherry and berry fruit, a light body, gentle tannin and moderate acidity that make it approachable and refreshing. **Where it grows** — it is widespread in Austria's Weinviertel and other northern regions, in German areas such as the Pfalz, Rheinhessen and Ahr, and in Hungary, where it is known as Kékoportó; everywhere the aim is fruity, early-drinking wine rather than depth. **At the table** — good with charcuterie, lighter meats and casual fare. **Cellaring** — made to be drunk young and fresh.
