Alfrocheiro

**Alfrocheiro** is a red grape from central Portugal, most closely tied to the Dão, where it is valued for the deep colour and balance it brings to blends; it is sometimes known as Alfrocheiro Preto. **In the glass** — deeply coloured, with aromas of blackberry, wild strawberry and a touch of spice; medium-bodied with smooth tannins and good acidity. **Where it grows** — the Dão above all, along with the Alentejo and other Portuguese regions; it usually works as a blending grape, adding both colour and freshness. **At the table** — roast lamb, grilled red meats, and hearty stews. **Cellaring** — drinks well young, but good examples reward a few years in bottle.
